Energy is released as heat when fossil fuels burn with oxygen. This energy can be used to warm buildings, cook food, power machines, generate electricity and move cars and lorries.

The use of fossil fuels was one of the keys to the Industrial Revolution that took place in the early 1800s.

Though there are still great quantities of fossil fuels in the Earth, some day they will be exhausted.
